What income does the Q2 payment cover?
Estimated tax is a “pay as you go” system, so this payment is for the income you earned April 1 โ May 31, 2026. If your income is uneven across the year, you can pay based on what you actually made each quarter (the annualized-income method) rather than in four equal amounts.
How much to pay, and how to pay it
The simplest way to avoid a penalty is the safe-harbor rule: pay in at least 100% of last year's tax (110% if you're a higher earner), spread across the four quarters, and you're covered no matter what you end up owing. Pay online in minutes with IRS Direct Pay (from a bank account, no fee) or EFTPS. Our safe-harbor calculator works out the per-quarter amount.
What if you miss the Q2 deadline?
Don't panic and don't skip the quarter. The underpayment penalty is essentially daily interest, so paying a few days late costs very little โ the mistake is not paying at all and letting it compound. Pay as soon as you can and see our missed-payment guide and penalty guide.
